GATHERING 5 Warwick Street London
Gathering is pleased to announce Oda Sønderland’s solo exhibition, The Matrician, on view 25 June – 1 August 2026 in London, with a private view on the evening of Wednesday, 24 June.
For The Matrician, Sønderland has created six new watercolour works presented in dialogue with a series of sculptures, each echoing the motifs found in Sønderland’s paintings. Each piece holds the story of a life-form, evolved from an alien meteorite at an unknown time, which spread fragments across our planet. Sønderland’s sculptures exhibit the found remains of these creatures: a brain, shoulderblade, heart, hipbone, nerve and cochlea. The watercolour counterparts to these remains are rendered in delicate, finely-detailed style reminiscent of Japanese illustration, a lasting source of inspiration for the artist.
Sønderland expands the narrative universe of her paintings and sculptures through poems that reveal the life and demise of the creatures. Transcribed into human language, the poems reflect what little information we have on the mysterious nature of these entities, while also illuminating their final death scenes. At the core of Sønderland’s narrative is death and its cyclical nature; through their mortality, we can explore the possibilities and different forms that life can take in the universe.
The environment within which these works sit resembles that of a museum, a cabinet of curiosities which casts the sculptures as relics and the paintings as our attempt to understand them. While fictional, the exhibition blurs physical reality with the creativity of the imagination, turning a scientific lens to the artist’s unique mythology.
