Gathering is delighted to participate in Art Cologne for the first time with a presentation of works by Emanuel de Carvalho, Francesco João and Soojin Kang. Art Cologne, founded in 1967 as Kölner Kunstmarkt is the world’s oldest art fair of its kind.
Central to the booth is Emanuel de Carvalho’s large-scale painting land lack. Drawing on Catherine Malabou’s concept of anarchy, de Carvalho’s land lack suggests a subtle disintegration of conventional structures of order and control. Through weathered surfaces and an irregular composition, the painting challenges expectations of structured spaces, proposing decay as a form of resistance-a quiet disruption against rigid human systems.

Also in the booth, Francesco João’s quiet meditation, Untitled, posits the medium of painting as a confrontation with fast imagery deriving from the digital sphere. The monochrome canvas of muted tones plays with the history of representation with allusions ranging to elements from classical renaissance to contemporary painting, such as On Kawara’s long series of Date Paintings.
