Gathering’s booth at the first edition of Art Cologne Mallorca will spotlight practices that converge through a shared sensitivity to material, process and spatial balance. The presentation will showcase new works by South Korean textile artist Soojin Kang and Chinese sculptor Anyi Ji.

Soojin Kang’s new series consists of three suspended tapestries: through wrapping, knotting and binding natural materials, Kang constructs complex systems of interlinked forms. The artist integrates wooden elements into her tapestries, twisting organic yarn and rigid wood into a display of paradoxical tension that requires relinquishing control to the material itself. From Kang’s process emerges a vigorously tactile series of suspended works that occupy a threshold between object, body and architecture.

Working predominantly with clay, Anyi Ji foregrounds the inherent uncertainty and chance embedded within her chosen material. Ji’s new sculptures sit on a base of broken slate; these small-scale works respond to the ineffable way that clay unfolds, regardless of human intention. Drawing on the rhythmic harmony of ikebana—the Japanese art of flower arrangement—Ji’s works imagine growth, flow and movement whilst attending to the balance between emptiness and form.

Kang and Ji articulate a shared language of creation in which form emerges through a deeply rooted process. Clay and fibre respond to gravity, pressure and time, resulting in works that trade an emphasis on speed for reflection, resolution for attentiveness.
