We are thrilled to announce Gathering’s participation in this year’s edition of Art OnO featuring artists from across the roster of both Gathering and Glasshouse. The booth will include works from Benedikt Hopp, Francesco João, Tamara K.E., Ndayé Kouagou, Wynnie Mynerva, Tai Shani and Jame St Findlay and span painting, multimedia sculpture and watercolour.
Central to the booth, Tai Shani’s Haunted by a Million Small Suns II showcases the candlestick, a recurring motif in her practice. Shani renders the comically curved candlestick in jesmonite with an illuminated blue glass flame. Themes of spirituality, mortality and mythology frequent Shani’s work and pepper the candlestick with a myriad of possible meanings - from a symbol of hope and healing, to a phallic reference, to representative of a vigil or memorial, or even invoking witchcraft and the occult. The melting candle hints at the passage of time, or perhaps, signals that the time for hegemonic and age-old power structures is running out.
Ndayé Kouagou will display two of his recent works, Where can I feel comfortable in this changing world? and A really good question. Kouagou’s practice starts from texts of which he is the author and is steeped in confusion, reflection and irony. His vulnerable text-based works verge on the nonsensical, but hint at greater power structures in today’s world.
