We are thrilled to announce Gathering’s participation in Basel Social Club for the first time with a presentation of works by Tai Shani.
In The Sun is a Ghost that Haunts the Night, Shani embraces an exaggerated gothic aesthetic through the motif of melting candles. She draws upon their role as markers of sacred or ritual space, bringing light into darkness, while playfully emphasising their phallic shape.

Shani’s Lupae-Lux series is named She-Wolf Light, drawing inspiration from the iconic sculpture of the wolf that nursed the twins Romulus and Remus - figures which were added to the statue during the medieval period. A French edition poster for Fellini’s Roma echoes this imagery, portraying a woman in the same nurturing pose, adorned with multiple breasts. The tagline reads: “Rome is a beautiful place to wait for the end of the world.”
