Gathering Announces Representation of Tamara K.E

Gathering is delighted to announce representation of Georgian artist Tamara K.E (born in Tbilisi; lives and works in Düsseldorf and New York).

“It’s a privilege to begin the journey of representation with such an accomplished, institutionally recognised mid-career artist, amongst many achievements having represented Georgia at the 50th Venice Biennale. 20th century German painting was a cornerstone of my art education; Oehlen, Kippenberger and Polke are my heroes and Tamara’s work is imbued with this painterly tradition, alongside a sense of play and subversion that is unmistakably her own. It is exciting to present her work at Frieze Cork Street with her partner Gia - their first ever two person show, opening 2 May - and I look forward to a solo show at Gathering in 2025”
Alex Flick, Founder & Director

Over the course of her career, K.E. has shifted from focusing on socio-critical conceptual painting to exploring a language that delves into the sensitivities of cultural memories and the moment of transition toward an ‘unknown future.’ Her work intertwines whispers and information jams, with each scene—viewed naturally through a female lens—hinting at states of dissolution or delirium within a continuum. This interplay constructs seemingly random yet interconnected systems of codes, signifiers, and energy fields—a stage of sorts that bids farewell to history. Philosopher Boris Groys notes the ‘Dadaistic’ manner in which K.E. stages a ‘free and slightly dreamy game of associations’ in her practice, as she assembles a diverse range of images, objects, and references into paintings that are both ludic and unsettling.

Tamara K. E. was born in Tbilisi, Georgia. She graduated from the Academy of Art Düsseldorf in 2005 and has lived in New York and Düsseldorf since 2010. K.E. represented Georgia at the 50th Venice Biennale and was invited to the 1st Prague Biennial. She has exhibited at venues such as Haus Huth, Daimler Contemporary Berlin; Sprengel Museum, Hanover; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Central House of Artists, Moscow; CoBrA Museum, Amsterdam; Van der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal; Kunsthalle Hamburg, and Kunstahalle Göppingen, among others.
